Meta is looking to attract creators that are tired of the TikTok drama, and also looking at giving Instagram an iPad app. Finally. Additionally, Threads is looking to follow the Instagram profile updates and allow multiple links and there are new Teen Account restrictions on Facebook.
Take a look at what’s happening this week in social media.
1. Meta wants creators
This shouldn’t be a surprise: Meta wants top-tier content. It appears they are banking on TikTok creators being annoyed by the uncertainty surrounding the app.
According to reports, Instagram’s looking to appeal to TikTok creators on several fronts, by adding an iPad app, improving its search functionality to focus on the content of each post and/or video, and offering new incentives to creators to make the switch.
2. Instagram is finally getting a TikTok app
If you’ve ever tried to look at Instagram on an iPad, you’re familiar with the blown-up phone version of the app. That could soon change, and it’s a long-awaited development for the app.
From The Verge:
Meta is developing a version of Instagram for iPad, according to The Information. Currently, running Instagram on an iPad is just a blown-up version of the iPhone app, so an official Instagram app from Meta would be a very welcome change.
3. Threads may soon allow more than one profile link
It looks like Threads is trying hard to provide traffic-driving opportunities in the platform. At least, it’s being tested.
As you can see in this example, posted by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, Threads is experimenting with the option to add more than one profile link. Right now, you can only add a single link that’s then displayed below your bio field in the app.
The update looks set to follow Instagram, which now enables users to add up to five links to their profile. Instagram added that option back in 2023, providing more ways to promote your off-platform presence within the app.
4. New Facebook teen account restrictions
The platforms are always trying to keep up with demand for safer social media experiences, and it looks like Facebook has a few new ones for younger users. To keep it short and sweet, take a look at their website:
Takeaways
- We’re introducing additional Instagram Teen Account protections, so teens under 16 won’t be able to go Live or turn off our protections from unwanted images in DM without a parent’s permission.
- We’ll also begin making Teen Accounts available on Facebook and Messenger.
- Instagram Teen Accounts have been well-received, with 97% of teens aged 13-15 keeping their default restrictions on, and 94% of US parents saying Teen Accounts would be helpful.
