It’s all about user experience. From making video and photo content more accessible to removing ads, everything in social is about making users actually want to use social media again. This should be an interesting year. Also, Mosseri outlines the algorithm factors for creators, and everybody else is trying to make their content searchable and easy to find.
Let’s dive into this week’s social news.
1. Snapchat’s ad-free Platinum monthly subscription
For a cool $15.99 a month, you can get a Snapchat Platinum+ membership that removes ads completely. This is a steep increase over the $2.99 subscription price.
The Platinum Monthly Plan for Snapchat+ lets you enjoy Snapchat+ with no Sponsored Snaps, and no Story or Lens ads!
After subscribing or switching to this plan, you may need to wait a few minutes before you stop seeing ads.
2. Threads rolls out image tagging
According to Adam Mosseri, this has been a long-awaited request from the community.
From TechCrunch:
Meta’s Threads app is getting some new Instagram-like features. According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, Threads is adding a dedicated media tab which highlights users’ posts with photos and video, as well as photo tagging abilities.
Threads will also make the Markup feature global, allowing users to write on top of posts.
3. Adam Mosseri’s new video series should be very useful
Adam Mosseri is releasing a series of videos to explain Instagram’s algorithm and the factors that make it work. If you’re curious, you should spend some time over there watching. Here is the first in the series.
4. Bluesky adds a video tab on user profiles
Bluesky’s video posts are still limited to just one minute, but they should be easier to find outside of feeds now that you can simply swap to that tab to see any videos that someone has posted.
