From a technical update to entirely new AI-driven platforms, there’s a lot going on in the social media world. Have you heard of Shelf or SocialAI? These new apps are trying to change the way we interact with social media.
Read on to see what’s happening in the social app world this week.
1. TikTok introduces a delete and re-edit option
This is a cool and highly useful feature from TikTok.
This function enables creators to remove edits made to a video and start over, providing flexibility for those who want to improve or revise their content without starting from scratch. This option is particularly useful for creators who manage the entire video production process within TikTok, simplifying the re-editing process when new ideas or revisions arise after a video is posted.
2. YouTube leans into generative AI with new features
YouTube has dabbled in generative AI for ages, but things are getting serious.
YouTube said it will start integrating Google DeepMind’s Veo generative AI video model into YouTube Shorts later this year. That will let creators produce “even more incredible video backgrounds, breathing life into concepts that were once impossible to visualize,” according to Voolich.
…
DeepMind’s Veo will let creators generate 6-second standalone video clips for Shorts. YouTube said AI-generated content will be watermarked using SynthID, and “we’ll apply a label that clearly communicates to viewers it was generated with AI,” Voolich said.
Lots of new generative AI options on the table over at YouTube. Should be interesting!
3. Shelf: The social platform that learns from your media consumption
There’s an app that tracks all of your media consumption and shares it. Gone are the days of relentless selfies—now, there’s an app that follows your favorite shows, books, movies, and more. It’s called Shelf. Here’s some more info:
The Shelf app, available on iOS and coming to Android, lets you connect your accounts associated with media, including Apple Music, Goodreads, Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube, then builds a customizable “storefront” web page that updates automatically based on your consumption progress. You can also manually add links to any other internet service to your virtual shelf — even links to your favorite TechCrunch articles, which you can showcase to your followers.
4. The app full of AI bots—on purpose
SocialAI is a new app that has millions of AI bots waiting to engage with your content. No, this is for real. While X and other apps are fighting bot engagement, one has decided to go all in.
The new app, called SocialAI, is filled with “millions of AI followers”, all of which are waiting on your updates, and will be able to respond thoughtfully to your queries and questions.
Well, “thoughtfully” may not be the right term, as there’s no actual thought going on here. SocialAI is essentially ChatGPT social, with the many bot profiles built around different personality traits, and designed to reply to your updates based on that programming.
